What is the difference between and advocate and a counselor
- An advocate helps you navigate what comes next by providing support, information, and practical assistance after a traumatic experience.
- A counselor helps you heal emotionally through therapy and evidence-based mental health treatment.
Many survivors benefit from both services. An advocate can provide support during the immediate aftermath of an assault or while navigating systems like healthcare or law enforcement, while a counselor can help address the longer-term emotional and psychological effects of trauma.
A SASS advocate can provide emotional support, help navigate challenges, explain your options, and connect you with resources. Advocates are there to support you and your decisions, not make decisions for you.
In most circumstances, whether or not to report the assault to law enforcement and/or Title IX, is your decision. A SASS advocate can help you understand the reporting process and discuss available options.
